Popular gadget website Gizmodo put up a review of the two new readers from Sony today. The reviewer was split: the Touch has lots of features but an experience-killing glare that makes the device about as easy to read on as a regular computer screen. With the Pocket version, he is disappointed with the singularity of it, but suggests that it does the one thing pretty well. Personally, I'm a big fan of Sony's attempt with the Pocket to try to do one thing and do it well. The tech is too new for us to be iPod-Nano-ing it just yet: Sony Reader Touch and Pocket Review: - Gizmodo.
MSNBC interviewed Dan Brown regarding The Lost Symbol today, and while it's largely a pedestrian read, the journalist drops a line I'm not sure I agree with: An enormous first printing of 5 million copies is something every author dreams of, but it’s also a lot of pressure for Brown. Really? Do we all dream of killing that many trees? I dream of a day when I can write a short story on Monday, have it proofread and editing Tuesday-Thursday, approve a nice cover by Friday, and have people downloading it on their devices on Saturday. I think that's a way, way cooler dream: For Dan Brown, fame is ‘a double-edged sword’ - TODAY: Book news
What's far more interesting to me and many other ebook proponents is that The Lost Symbol–unarguably the most popular book of the year–is that, in regards to Amazon, more people downloaded the ebook than bought the hardcover. Two reasons for this: the ebook is a solid $20 cheaper than the hardcover, so people shopping on Amazon have a pretty easy choice on their hands, and people who want this book right now are not waiting for Amazon to ship them one, which skews data. I'd be more interested in seeing the week-long sales data, but still, cool: Kindle edition of The Lost Symbol outselling Amazon hardcovers!
I'm sure it's gone around before, but I just wanted to recirculate this list of the 100 most beautiful words in English. I think my favourite is Halcyon. What's yours?
